Irish theatre is a vibrant force, famed for its rich literary tradition and world-class productions. Irish Theatre Institute works to maximise creative opportunities and resources for performing artists and producers across theatre and dance in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and internationally. ITI is proud to be at the forefront of the Irish theatre industry, acting as a key promoter of and advocate for the Irish performing arts.
ITI receives annual funding from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon under its Regularly Funded Organisations category and project funding from Culture Ireland and Foras na Gaeilge. ITI also receives funding from Dublin City Council and occasional grant aid from Awards for All (Northern Ireland).
Housed in an early Georgian building, in Dublin’s cultural quarter, Temple Bar, Irish Theatre Institute was set up originally in 1994 as Theatre Shop. One of ITI’s primary objectives is to address and promote Irish theatre in an international context through developing networks and enhancing touring opportunities for Irish theatre and dance companies North and South. Our international networking and promotion activity has directly resulted in many successful tours of Irish work abroad and the development of fruitful international collaborations. Last October (2nd – 3rd) saw the 15th Annual ITI International Theatre Exchange taking place in Dublin, coinciding with the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival, and with Vanessa Redgrave delivering the keynote address.
ITI is also a resource organisation providing information and support services to theatre professionals at home and abroad. ITI publishes the Irish Theatre Handbook (4th edition July 2007), which is known as the most comprehensive guide to professional theatre, dance and opera in Ireland, North and South. The Handbook is available for purchase from good bookshops and via its online companion resource, Irish Theatre Online, a website that also contains the recently added, brand new searchable database Irish Theatre Artists presenting detailed profiles of more that 400 freelance Irish artists. ITI also conducts significant research work and is proud to have completed the acclaimed Irish Playography, the first comprehensive catalogue of new Irish plays produced since the formation of the National Theatre in 1904. This resource contains detailed information on over 2000 Irish plays including playwright biographies, dates, casts and crews of the original production and information on the rights and script availability. The Irish Language repertoire of new plays since 1900 is currently in development and close to completion and will be available in 2009 at the Playography na Gaeilge site.
Irish Theatre Institute is the information provider for and about the Irish theatre sector and welcomes requests for information from national and international promoters and presenters with an interest in Irish theatre.
